Trump spends first year making communities less safe
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement as President Trump marks his first year of his second term in office. Throughout the past year, the president has systematically undermined gun violence prevention efforts, despite gun violence remaining the number one killer of kids and teens in the U.S.
“President Trump has not just ignored the gun violence crisis — he has spent the past year attacking much of the most commonsense and bipartisan violence prevention efforts, while paving the way for deadlier, more frequent shootings with even fewer resources to help survivors,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “The president’s decisions defy commonsense; from slashing $1 billion in school mental health resources, to effectively legalizing machine guns, to gutting law enforcement against gun crime — and diverting those resources to violent, indiscriminate immigration operations. It is obvious that Trump cares more about doing favors for his gun industry CEO campaign donors than protecting our communities from violent crime. GIFFORDS will never be silent about his anti-safety agenda.”
Despite major mass shootings in 2025, including at Annunciation Church, Brown University, Stockton California, Midtown Manhattan, and many others, the Trump administration has refused to act. Instead, it has stripped the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) of thousands of staff members, making gun crime harder to solve. The president’s Department of Justice also removed more than $300 million in community violence intervention funding and made it significantly harder for community programs to secure future grants.
