GIFFORDS PAC endorses Deb Haaland for governor of New Mexico

WASHINGTONGIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement endorsing former congresswoman and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for governor of New Mexico.

“Deb Haaland is the leader New Mexicans need right now. She is determined to fight crime, protect New Mexican families and create a future free from gun violence across the state. I am proud to endorse her for governor,” said Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “Secretary Haaland knows that the solution to gun violence starts with commonsense gun safety laws like those she supported as a member of Congress. She also knows that we must invest more in community-level support and intervention programs, which protect the communities most impacted by gun violence. Under her leadership, New Mexico families can trust that their governor will lead the fight to save lives.”

“Crime is generational and can be exacerbated when people who shouldn’t get ahold of guns. We need to get to the root causes of crime, while also taking commonsense steps to keep our communities safe. I’m proud to have the support of GIFFORDS PAC and to work alongside them to pass smart gun legislation that can help prevent the next tragedy,” said Secretary Deb Haaland.

Deb Haaland served as the United States Secretary of the Interior from 2021 to 2025, where she was confirmed with bipartisan support and became the first ever Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary. She previously represented New Mexico in the U.S. House of Representatives and served as the chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party. During her time in public service, Secretary Haaland has voted in favor of numerous important gun safety bills like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act, as well as supported safe gun storage requirements in Congress. She has also been a strong champion for measures that would close domestic violence loopholes and secure funding for gun violence prevention research.
