House Republicans advance bill to defund critical gun violence prevention programs
House FY27 Labor HHS cuts all gun violence prevention research
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention group led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement on the House Appropriations Committee’s advancement of the FY2027 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.
The bill will defund all gun violence prevention research (a $25 million cut), which plays a crucial role in helping us understand the causes of and solutions for our gun violence crisis. It will also gut funding for the Youth Violence Prevention ($18.1 million cut) and Promise Neighborhoods ($91 million cut) programs, leaving more Americans vulnerable to violence.
“This bill completely eliminates gun violence prevention research that is critical to fighting the gun violence epidemic we face as a country. House Republicans are gutting this important funding at the direction of their gun industry CEO campaign donors. These decisions fundamentally make the country more dangerous,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “GIFFORDS won’t stop fighting to ensure these programs are fully funded.”
