Gabby Giffords, Rep. Horsford & survivors joined Leader Jauregui for rollout of her public safety platform

As gun violence survivors, the speakers reflected on their personal experiences with gun violence and Jauregui outlined her vision for public safety in Nevada.

Las Vegas,  – Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, co-founder of the national gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, and Congressman Steven Horsford (D-NV) joined Sandra Jauregui, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant governor of Nevada, for the roll out of her public safety platform.

During the press conference, each speaker shared how their experiences as survivors of gun violence inspired their advocacy and discussed the importance of electing gun safety champions – like Leader Jauregui and Congressman Horsford – to advance public safety in Nevada.

“As a survivor of the devastating 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting, Majority Leader Jauregui knows exactly how urgent this issue is to Nevadans. In the Assembly, she has been on the frontlines of passing commonsense gun safety laws that will save lives across the state and I look forward to her building on that progress as the next Lieutenant Governor of Nevada,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.

GIFFORDS PAC has endorsed Jauregui in the 2026 Lt. Governor’s race and Congresswoman Giffords was in Las Vegas to campaign on her behalf.

“I am proud to be a champion of federal legislation to make our communities safer but the fight is far from over. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to break the cycle of violence and make our communities safer under a Democratic Majority in the House,” said Congressman Steven Horsford. “No one in America or in Nevada should live in fear of gun violence and I will not stop fighting until our communities can feel safe sending their children to school, going to the grocery store, or just walking down the street.”

“I survived the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, but the sounds, the images and that moment have scarred me and changed me forever. That night deepened my sense of responsibility in a way I can’t fully describe. I vowed to fight and I took that horror with me to the legislature determined to turn tragedy into action,” said Leader Jauregui. “I will work with anyone, Democrat, Republican or Independent, with the same mission – creating a Nevada where people feel safe and free to go to concerts, or church or their school without being gunned down. We can protect both the Second Amendment and second graders  – that is what I intend to do as Lt. Governor.”

Leader Jauregui concluded the press conference by announcing her public safety platform. As Lt. Governor, Leader Jauregui will work to:

    • Establish a Preventing Abuse, Crime, and Terrorism Office, or the PACT Office, which will work with law enforcement to enforce laws, educate the public, and to stop convicted criminals, domestic abusers, and terrorists from gaining access to deadly weapons.
    • Reform firearm dealer licensing at the state level to ensure dealers are hiring employees that pass background checks, meet minimum age requirements and are trained to follow standard security procedures, like requiring products to be locked up at closing.
    • Ensure Nevada tax dollars will only buy firearms and equipment from gun dealers who are good corporate citizens with clean compliance records.
