Gabby Giffords, Michigan AG Nominee Eli Savit, Sheriff Washington convened local advocates for a community conversation on public safety

Detroit  –  Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, the co-founder of the national gun violence prevention group GIFFORDS, and Eli Savit, Democratic nominee for Michigan attorney general, convened local leaders for a community conversation on bolstering public safety in Michigan.

This discussion featured community advocates, as well as state lawmakers who worked alongside Savit to pass and implement Michigan’s gun safety laws, including the state’s safe storage requirements and universal background checks in 2023.

“I was honored to join Rep. Giffords today for an incredibly important community conversation,” said Eli Savit, Democratic nominee for Michigan attorney general. “Rep. Giffords is an inspiration, and I’m excited to work with her, law enforcement, and gun violence prevention advocates across Michigan. Ending the scourge of gun violence will take all of us—and as Michigan’s next attorney general, I’m ready to fight alongside communities to ensure that not one more life is lost.”

“I was proud to join Eli Savit today to hear from community members about why fighting gun violence in Michigan is so vital. Eli has been on the frontlines of building a safer future for Michiganders and today he made it clear he will continue to do so as Michigan’s next attorney general,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “We can trust that Eli will stand up to the gun lobby and defend Michigan’s gun laws against the Trump administration’s attempts to undo the major progress on gun safety Michigan has seen in recent years.”

“As a Michigander and gun owner, I’m looking for our next attorney general to be committed to keeping our communities safe. After hearing from Eli Savit today, I know he’s up for the job. From his experience preventing and prosecuting violent crime, to his commitment to defending our state’s gun safety laws, I know he’ll advocate for what’s best for Michigan,” said Jon Gold, president of the Michigan chapter of GIFFORDS Gun Owners for Safety and certified firearms instructor. “Michiganders, and an overwhelming majority of gun owners, want commonsense gun safety laws to protect our communities and leaders like Eli Savit who will put public safety over politics.”

This community conversation followed GIFFORDS PAC’s endorsement of Savit for attorney general earlier this month.
