GIFFORDS PAC endorses Abdul El-Sayed for US Senate
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement endorsing Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for the United States Senate.
“Mike Rogers has been a disaster for Michiganders and public safety. After taking NRA checks and A-ratings for years, Mike Rogers has voted to gut gun safety laws. Gun violence is a complex issue that should be addressed from all angles, including through support for community violence intervention, standing with victims of domestic violence, and fighting for commonsense gun safety laws,” said Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “I know Dr. El-Sayed will refuse to compromise with corporate gun industry interests, and will oppose the gun lobby and its dangerous policies. I urge Michiganders to send him to Congress this November.”
“Gun violence is a public health crisis. And as the first former health official in the Senate, I will tackle this crisis head on alongside fighters like GIFFORDS,” said Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. “We can’t afford to wait any longer to take real action. I’m proud to stand with leaders like Congresswoman Giffords to reject the gun lobby and keep our communities safe. It’s an honor to receive the endorsement of GIFFORDS PAC.”
Before running for Senate, Dr. El-Sayed gained valuable experience addressing complexing public health crises like gun violence by serving as the executive director of the Detroit Health Department, as health officer for the City of Detroit, and as director of Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human & Veterans Services. In his role with Wayne County, he led a restructuring of the county’s Juvenile Detention Facility, partnering with local community violence intervention groups to break cycles of violence that put the safety of our children and communities at risk.
