GIFFORDS celebrates key gun safety bills signed into law in Delaware
DOVER, Del. — GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement celebrating Delaware Governor Matt Meyer signing key gun safety bills into law. The bills will work to close ghost gun loopholes, improve licensing and security requirements for gun dealers, and codify Delaware’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety.
“In recent years, Delaware has made remarkable strides in creating a future free from gun violence, but critical gaps still remain. With the passage of these new laws, Delaware is taking important steps to further protect communities from ghost guns, crack down on gun trafficking and help firearm dealers keep guns out of the wrong hands,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “We were proud to collaborate with the Coalition for a Safer Delaware on this slate of commonsense gun safety bills and we applaud Governor Meyer for his continued leadership on this issue. We are also grateful to Representative Johnson, Representative Gorman and Senator Sokola for their commitment to passing these key gun safety laws.”
“Gun laws save lives. These policies in particular focus on oversight and regulation of the industry and Delaware’s ability to prevent and respond to gun violence in our communities. Our Coalition is proud to have worked with partners to get these bills to the Governor’s desk for his signature,” said Traci Murphy, the Executive Director of Coalition for a Safer Delaware.
This session, Delaware passed the following bills championed by GIFFORDS:
- Closing Ghost Gun Loopholes (HB 418 – Johnson): This bill will help prevent the spread of ghost guns by creating a path for those who legally own unserialized firearms to have them serialized or rendered inoperable. The bill also aligns Delaware’s law with federal serialization standards.
- Gun Dealer Licensing & Code of Conduct Act (SB 300 – Sokola): This bill will create a licensing system for dealers, and will add new inspection, reporting, training and security requirements.
- Establishing an Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety (HB 369 – Gorman): This bill will codify Delaware’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety, which works to stop gun violence before it ever happens by addressing the root causes of gun violence and supporting victims.
