2022 was a landmark year in the fight for gun safety. After horrific shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, we helped support the passage of the first federal gun violence prevention legislation in 30 years.
The passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in the summer of 2022 was possible only because of the movement built in the decade between the shootings at Sandy Hook and Uvalde. During this time, we helped pass more than 525 gun safety laws in nearly every state and elected gun safety champions up and down the ballot.
In 2022, we also officially launched Giffords Center for Violence Intervention, which helps secure funding and advocate for community-based organizations working in underserved communities.
But the year was not without its challenges and setbacks. In June, the Supreme Court issued a dangerous, ahistorical decision striking down New York State’s concealed carry permitting law, making it easier to carry hidden, loaded guns in public. Our team has been working tirelessly to advise lawmakers and advocates on the new Second Amendment landscape and defend commonsense, constitutional gun laws nationwide.
Despite the tremendous progress made in 2022, there’s so much more work to be done. We’re so grateful for your support, which fuels this fight.

Our organization is made up of three distinct entities, working in concert to end gun violence in America.
For 10 years, Giffords laid the groundwork for the passage of federal legislation. We lobbied Congress. We passed hundreds of state gun laws. We released reports, scorecards, and studies demonstrating the effectiveness of gun laws—policies that are supported by the vast majority of the American people.
In the summer of 2022, Americans collectively said “enough.” The time was finally right for change. Giffords worked with gun safety champions in Congress, led by Senator Chris Murphy, to pass one of only six significant federal gun safety laws in the past 100 years.
The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act made the following changes:

Hate crimes are on the rise, and guns make it far too easy for a bias-motivated attack to turn deadly. Yet our gun laws suffer from major limitations that allow too many people convicted of hate crimes to obtain firearms. Our report, How America’s Gun Laws Fuel Armed Hate, examines how we can better protect communities from armed extremists.
