Defeating harmful legislation backed by the gun lobby
Giffords and the Giffords Virginia Coalition, formerly known as the Virginia Coalition for Common Sense, worked with Governor Terry McAuliffe and lawmakers in the Virginia General Assembly to defeat harmful gun bills in 2017 that would have allowed more firearms in the hands of untrained individuals. Governor McAuliffe vetoed several dangerous bills, including two bills which would have made women and families in crisis less safe. In addition, members of the Giffords Virginia Coalition worked with legislators to defeat two extreme gun bills, including an irresponsible campus carry bill, which would have let individuals carry loaded, concealed firearms on public college campuses, and a dangerous permitless carry bill that would have let unsuitable individuals carry loaded, concealed weapons in public.
Virginians would also be impacted by a gun lobby-backed bill currently under consideration in Congress. This legislation, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, would force each state to accept the concealed carry laws of every other state, even if their standards for carrying a loaded, hidden gun in public are weaker. Giffords is working with Congressional leaders and Virginia stakeholders to highlight the public safety risks Virginia would face from federally mandated concealed carry reciprocity.
