New Mexico has no laws regulating machine guns.

Federal law requires machine guns to be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), and generally prohibits the transfer or possession of machine guns manufactured after May 19, 1986.1

New Mexico enacted a law in 2025 that prohibits possession an unlawfully obtained weapon conversion device or knowingly transporting an unlawfully obtained weapon conversion device. The term “weapon conversion device” is defined as “a part or combination of parts designed and intended to convert a semiautomatic weapon into a fully automatic weapon.”2
