New Mexico has essentially no laws aimed specifically at firearms trafficking, with the exception of the state’s new firearm background checks law. Adopted in 2019, that law now makes it unlawful in most cases to sell or buy a firearm from an unlicensed seller without a federal instant background check conducted by a licensed firearms dealer.1 For more information about this law, see the Universal Background Checks in New Mexico section.
