Three decades and hundreds of gun laws later, Giffords Law Center remains committed to saving lives.

Thirty years ago, a gunman stormed into San Francisco law firm Pettit & Martin, killing eight people and injuring six others. In the wake of this tragedy, the Bay Area legal community banded together to improve the state’s gun laws. Today, Giffords Law Center is a leader in the national gun violence prevention movement, and California has some of the strongest gun laws in the country.
Every year, our supporters gather to honor those we lost at the 101 California Street shooting and the thousands of Americans who die from gun violence annually. We reflect on the past and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities to come—and remember that we wouldn’t be where we are today without your support.

It’s an honor to have First Lady Jill Biden join our 30th Anniversary Celebration. President Biden and his administration have gone further to champion strong gun laws than any president in decades. Following the tragedies in Buffalo and Uvalde last year, he signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first significant federal gun safety bill in a generation. We are thrilled to stand alongside the first lady and the Biden administration as we continue to work together to keep people safe from gun violence.
PATERSON HEALING COLLECTIVE
2023 Lifesaving Service Award
Paterson Healing Collective is a first-of-its-kind hospital-based violence intervention program specifically designed for youth who have survived the impact of trauma. Its on the ground presence has played a pivotal role in establishing healing spaces and advocating for increased investment in community violence intervention approaches. We are proud to collaborate as partners, united in our mission to foster safer and healthier communities, and to recognize Paterson Healing Collective for its transformative work.

2023 Odgers Pro Bono Award
We are deeply grateful to Sullivan & Cromwell for its dedicated pro bono support of gun violence prevention. For years, attorneys at Sullivan & Cromwell have represented Giffords Law Center on minimum age issues, whether at oral arguments or in amicus briefs, becoming experts on the subject and keeping us apprised of minimum age case law developments across the country. The firm has also made extensive contributions in other legal areas, including a recent historical research project on the Second Amendment.
