GIFFORDS PAC Endorses Elissa Slotkin for US Senate

Former Congresswoman Giffords to Join Representative Slotkin in Detroit on July 17

Washington DC —
Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, announced its endorsement of Representative Elissa Slotkin for the US Senate. This marks GIFFORDS PAC’s first federal endorsement for the 2024 election cycle. Representative Slotkin has been a staunch leader on gun safety in Congress and has made the issue a cornerstone of her campaign for Senate. Congresswoman Giffords will be traveling to Detroit to hold an endorsement event with Representative Slotkin on July 17 at 11 am. Press interested in attending should RSVP to Antoine Givens at antoine.givens@elissaslotkin.org

In March, Representative Slotkin joined Gabrielle Giffords, GIFFORDS, other gun violence prevention groups, and Michigan lawmakers at the Michigan State Capitol to demand action on gun safety and an end to preventable gun violence. The visit came a month after the deadly mass shooting at Michigan State University that killed three students and left five others injured in the congresswoman’s district.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
“Elissa has the unwavering commitment needed to address the epidemic of gun violence our country faces. Having grown up around firearms and worked in national security, she understands that we can respect the rights of gun owners while supporting the commonsense reforms needed to keep our families safe. With gun violence impacting communities all over Michigan every day – from big cities like Detroit to small towns like Oxford – Elissa has put the safety of Michiganders first and worked to pass meaningful gun safety laws. With our gun safety majority in the Senate on the line next fall, we must elect leaders who understand the urgency of this issue—starting with my friend Elissa. I am proud to endorse her today.”

Representative Elissa Slotkin:
“Every single day, we see more examples of families and communities across the country being torn apart by the gun violence epidemic. In big cities and rural towns, gun violence is now the leading cause of death for American children, and as the first member of Congress to have two school shootings in her district, I’ve seen the long-term impacts firsthand. I’m running for the US Senate to keep our communities and children safe from the things that are truly threatening them, and this issue is at the top of the list. It’s an honor to have the support of an unstoppable leader like Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who has made preventing gun violence her life’s work. I can’t wait to work with her in the Senate to pass laws, as we did just recently in Michigan, to help save lives and help put an end to this uniquely American crisis.”

Representative Elissa Slotkin has dedicated her career to serving the country she loves—from working to keep Americans safe in the intelligence and defense fields to serving her fellow Michiganders in public office. She was recruited into the CIA directly out of graduate school and trained as a Middle East analyst before serving three tours of duty alongside our military in Iraq. Prior to flipping a red district to blue in 2018 and serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Representative Slotkin negotiated some of the Pentagon’s most sensitive national security matters. Today, she’s continuing to prioritize the safety of the next generation by working to end senseless gun violence.

Representative Slotkin is the first member of Congress to have two school shootings in her district at Oxford High School and Michigan State University. In Congress, she has worked diligently to honor the lives of those lost across Michigan with action by voting for legislation like the Assault Weapons Ban and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and leading commonsense bills like the Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act and the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act.
