GIFFORDS PAC Endorses Senator Chris Murphy for Reelection to US Senate

Washington DC — Today, GIFFORDS PAC, the gun safety organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, endorsed Senator Chris Murphy for reelection to the US Senate.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

“I’m so proud to endorse my friend Chris Murphy for reelection to the US Senate. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Chris has been one of the strongest voices for commonsense gun safety legislation in America, and he’s been a steadfast partner in our work to save lives and change the politics on this issue in Washington. Last year, he achieved what many deemed impossible—passing the first federal gun safety law in nearly 30 years. But I know that he’s not done yet, and I’m excited to continue working with Chris to pass other desperately needed measures to curb our epidemic of violence, like universal background checks. It’s imperative that voters across Connecticut send him back to Washington in 2024, where I know he will continue to lead the way in creating a safer future for the next generation.”

Senator Chris Murphy

“GIFFORDS has been an incredible partner in the fight to end gun violence, and I am grateful for their support in my reelection campaign. Their work was critical in helping pass the first comprehensive piece of gun safety legislation in 30 years. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Actmarked the beginning of a new decade for this movement, and I look forward to continuing our work together to pass more legislation that will save lives.”

In 2012, 20 students and six educators were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in then-Representative Murphy’s district. He vowed to honor them with action, and over the last decade, Senator Murphy has worked to strengthen our nation’s gun safety laws in their name.

In office, Senator Murphy has introduced legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales and supported bills that would remove weapons of war from America’s streets. In the wake of countless tragedies, including the devastating shootings at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando and Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Senator Murphy has fought to break the legislative logjams that have long prevented legislators from taking action to protect our communities—even going so far as to filibuster for 15 hours on the Senate floor in support of lifesaving solutions. In June 2022, Congress passed the first significant federal gun safety legislation in 30 years with Senator Murphy’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

This past June, Senator Murphy and GIFFORDS also co-hosted several gun violence prevention groups and leaders, including President Joe Biden, to celebrate the one year anniversary of this landmark legislation in Hartford, Connecticut.
