For more than 20 years, Representative Adam Schiff has worked to bring about transformational, progressive change in Congress on behalf of his constituents—especially when it comes to protecting Californians from senseless gun violence. He knows the risks America’s weak gun laws pose to our national security, and he’s fought tirelessly throughout his career to strengthen firearms regulations and keep his state’s children and families safe.
In 2005, Congress passed a dangerous NRA-backed bill called the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which essentially gave the gun industry a broad immunity from civil liability that no other industry enjoys. Horrified by the reality that the loved ones of those killed by gun violence were left with little to no legal recourse to take action against the gun industry, Representative Schiff first introduced his landmark Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act in 2013. This legislation would repeal PLCAA in its entirety and hold gun manufacturers accountable for far too many innocent lives lost from coast to coast. Time and time again, Representative Schiff has reintroduced this vital measure, and if elected to the US Senate, his first priority will be to abolish the filibuster to pass it and other commonsense bills designed to end gun violence once and for all.
In Washington DC, Representative Schiff has been an original co-sponsor of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, which would require a background check for every gun sale or transfer, and he supported legislation to fund and expand research into the root causes of gun violence. He also believes we should pass legislation to trace and prosecute straw purchasers and gun traffickers, ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, and increase resources for state and local law enforcement to quickly alert communities to deadly threats. In 2022, he took the first step in doing just that by working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years.
The fight to end gun violence is far from over, and we need to maintain a strong gun safety majority in the US Senate if we want meaningful progress to continue in 2025. Representative Adam Schiff will never stop fighting for commonsense solutions to combat America’s epidemic of gun violence, and it is crucial that he is elected as California’s next US senator this November. With him helping lead the way on this issue in the upper chamber, a safer future for every American will be within reach.
