Representative Adam Smith has repeatedly stood up to the gun lobby in Congress, raised his voice to say that America must address its gun violence crisis, and championed legislation that will save lives. His advocacy began at a young age, and he has never let up in the fight to protect his constituents from senseless violence. In 1990, Representative Smith began his political career by running for the Washington State Senate, where he became the youngest state senator in the country at just 25 years old. In 1996, he went on unseat a Republican incumbent in one of the most closely watched House races in the country, and has represented Washington’s Ninth district ever since.

Representative Smith served on the House Armed Services Committee with our founder, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and the two became close friends working together to keep our nation safe and support our service members. In office, Representative Smith has proven time and again to be a strong advocate for gun safety reforms and he knows we must take action to curtail the mass shootings that are ripping our communities apart. In 2022, Representative Smith was a proud supporter of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and throughout his time in office, he has worked to pass legislation that would extend background checks to all gun sales, ban the sale of deadly assault weapons, and close the Charleston loophole.

As an experienced legislator with a record of getting results, Representative Smith will continue to fight to keep our communities safe and pass meaningful gun safety legislation if reelected. This fall, voters from Seattle to Tacoma must turn out to vote and ensure that Representative Smith is sent back to Capitol Hill. With him helping lead the charge, a safer future is possible.
