Candidate
Dan Kildee
US House
Michigan
— 8th District Democrat
Incumbent2022
Michigan is home for Representative Dan Kildee, and he will always put the best interests of its citizens first. Born and raised in Flint, Representative Kildee spent years working to strengthen the social and economic wellbeing of his community as the creator of the Genesee County Land Bank, which helped to strengthen neighborhoods and reduce crime by redeveloping thousands of homes and buildings, and as the founder of the Center for Community Progress, a non-profit organization focused on bringing new economic development to older, industrial communities. Before coming to Congress, he also worked to improve the lives of children who experienced trauma and abuse during his nearly eight years at the Whaley Children’s Center, a residential treatment facility in Flint.
Upon his election to the House of Representatives in 2012, Representative Kildee eagerly took on the challenge of finding solutions to the many crises impacting families in mid-Michigan—including the deadly impacts of gun violence. Following the tragic 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Representative Kildee took immediate action to ban bump stocks by introducing the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act. As chief deputy whip of the House Democratic Caucus, he also helped to shepherd lifesaving measures like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and the Enhanced Background Checks Act through the House. Both bills would close dangerous loopholes that currently allow criminals and domestic abusers to buy weapons without a background check.
Elections in Michigan are always close, and this year will be no different. Redistricting significantly altered Representative Kildee’s district, and he went from representing a solidly blue seat to running in one of the toughest battlegrounds in the country. As such, voters must mobilize like never before and make sure that this gun safety champion is sent back to Washington DC in November. With Representative Dan Kildee as their voice in Congress, Michigan families will always have a fighter on their side who won’t stop pushing for stronger gun safety laws.
