Representative Don Beyer is a former small business owner, US Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and lieutenant governor of Virginia who has represented Virginia’s Eighth District since 2015. In every office he’s held, he has been a voice for progress and has worked diligently to achieve real change in his community. Representative Beyer knows well that suicide is a tragedy that affects us all. As co-chair of the House Suicide Prevention Task Force, he led bipartisan efforts to establish the 9-8-8 suicide prevention lifeline phone number and fought for the communities he represents to have access to much-needed mental health resources. 

In office, Representative Beyer has proudly voted for the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, legislation to close the Charleston loophole, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Firm in his belief that weapons of war have no place in American communities, he is also a long-time cosponsor of the assault weapons ban and measures to ban large-capacity ammunition magazines and bump stocks. Representative Beyer is also the author of the Assault Weapons Excise Act, which would impose a 1,000% excise tax on the manufacture, production, or importation of assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines. 

There is so much on the line this November, and it is more important than ever that we reestablish a gun safety majority in the House—which will start with reelecting gun safety champions like Representative Don Beyer. With him in office, Virginians can count on their representative to always prioritize public safety.
