Throughout her career, Senator Elizabeth Warren has fought on behalf of children and families across Massachusetts and pushed for the passage of strong policy solutions to combat our nation’s biggest crises—including America’s epidemic of gun violence. As an educator, a mother, and a champion for so many communities in her state, she knows that behind every shooting there are siblings, children, and parents whose lives are changed forever and that we must do more to protect the vulnerable.
In office, Senator Warren has been an unparalleled advocate for lifesaving solutions like universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders, as well as measures to keep firearms from falling into the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves or others. She knows that gun violence in America is a public health threat and that communities of color are disproportionately impacted by the scourge of senseless shootings—and she’s introduced transformative legislation like the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act to tackle this crisis head on. This landmark multifaceted legislation would invest needed funding in community violence intervention programs as well as research into the root causes of gun violence; ban military-style assault weapons, lethal gun accessories, and untraceable and undetectable firearms; crack down on gun trafficking efforts; raise the minimum age for all gun or ammunition purchases to 21; establish a seven-day waiting period for the purchase of all guns; strengthen gun storage laws; and expand gun-free school zones to colleges and universities. Many of these solutions were incorporated into the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Senator Warren supported and became the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years.
With rates of gun violence continuing to hit unacceptable levels across the country, it’s clear that we need policy experts like Senator Elizabeth Warren leading the charge in Washington DC to finally break the gridlock on this issue and pass meaningful solutions that will save lives. In her, Massachusetts families have an a fighter that will never back down from holding the gun industry accountable and building a safer future for the next generation.
