Representative Emilia Sykes believes that there is nothing more sacred than her obligation to ensure the safety and security of those she serves. Prior to her time in Congress, she served in multiple leadership positions in the Ohio Statehouse, spanning from assistant whip to minority whip, and eventually as the body’s minority leader. In this capacity, Representative Sykes pushed for a package of key gun safety reforms that included universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders. In this role, her work on domestic violence—which largely focused on granting protections to victims of dating violence—also earned bipartisan praise. 

In Congress, Representative Sykes has continued to reach across the aisle to put the safety of her constituents ahead of all else. In just two years, she’s been proud to cosponsor numerous pieces of gun safety legislation, including the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2023, which aims to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of those who pose a risk to themselves or others  by extending review periods and closing various loopholes, as well as Ethan’s Law, which would tighten federal regulations around the safe storage of firearms in homes to keep guns out of the hands of innocent children who don’t know their power.

This fall, the US House majority runs through districts like the one Representative Sykes is proud to serve in Ohio. It’s imperative that voters mobilize like never before to flip control of the chamber and send committed champions like Representative Emilia Sykes back to Congress. We know she’ll never give up until every Ohioan can live free from the burden of gun violence and that she has what it takes to break through the gridlock and achieve real progress in the fight to save lives.
