Westchester County Executive George Latimer firmly believes that even one death or injury that could have been avoided is unacceptable, and his commitment to keeping members of his community safe has been unwavering through over three decades in public service. Like so many Americans, Latimer knows that gun violence is a public health crisis that demands action—and if elected to Congress, he’ll bring a demonstrable record of commitment to enacting sensible gun laws to Capitol Hill, where he’ll never tire from fighting to keep everyday New Yorkers safe from harm.
Latimer has developed an unparalleled record on gun safety that spans all the way to his time as a local legislator who helped authorize his county’s first safe storage and transport requirements for handguns. As a New York State Senator, he also voted in favor of the SAFE Act—New York’s historic effort to restrict assault weapons, close gun show loopholes, institute a stringent background check procedure on gun sales, prevent guns from getting into the hands of people who posed risks to themselves or others, and increase penalties for perpetrators of domestic violence. In 2018, on his first day as Westchester County Executive, Latimer signed an executive order banning gun shows from county property after his predecessor permitted gun shows to regularly take place at the Westchester County Center, a major public event space In the six years since, he’s signed countywide legislation requiring that signs warning customers of the danger of guns be posted at every point of sale and that provides free door locks and video door-bells to victims of domestic violence who are at a higher risk of gun violence. He also helped launch the Westchester County Gun Violence Prevention Taskforce, which collaborates with law enforcement and other organizations to identify and implement best practices to prevent and ultimately eliminate gun violence.
It’s clear that George Latimer will never tire in standing up to bad actors like the gun lobby and do everything in his power to save lives from gun violence in every corner of his district. This November, it’s imperative that Empire State voters send him to Congress, where we know he’ll help lead the way on this issue in a new gun safety majority and finally help build the safer future our children deserve.
