Governor Gretchen Whitmer is a tough and tested leader who works tirelessly to put Michigan first. As a lifelong Michigander, she’s devoted her life to public service, governed through unprecedented, colliding crises, and remains focused on getting things done—especially when it comes to keeping the children and families of her state safe from gun violence.
Governor Whitmer is a committed advocate for commonsense gun laws, including background checks, closing the boyfriend loophole to keep guns out of the hands of people who have committed domestic abuse, and getting illegal guns off the streets. She knows that the gun lobby wields too much power over our political system, and has consistently taken it on while in office. Governor Whitmer is also committed to addressing the root causes of gun violence, and proposed channeling significant funding into intervention programs that would disrupt the deadly cycles of violence plaguing Michigan communities.
In November of 2021, when a school shooter took the lives of four students at Oxford High School, Governor Whitmer took immediate action to safeguard the lives of Michigan children. She emphasized that gun violence is a public health crisis, and she ensured that schools across her state have the ability to hire more counselors and social workers. She has also pushed for the passage of enhanced safe storage requirements and has consistently advocated for the need to implement extreme risk protection order laws in her state.
Governor Whitmer has long said that politics in Michigan don’t have to look the way they do in Washington DC, especially when it comes to working to prevent gun violence. She knows that Michiganders can come together, gun violence prevention advocates and responsible gun owners alike, to ensure that communities across the state are safe. This strong leadership is exactly what is needed in these turbulent times, especially as rates of gun violence spike to record highs. Now more than ever, it is critical that we reelect Governor Gretchen Whitmer to a second term in November. With her leading the charge, we know that Michigan can make great strides on gun safety issues in the years to come.
