Congressman Joe Cunningham uses his multidisciplinary professional background to evaluate various issues from a unique perspective, especially when it comes to tackling gun violence. Prior to his election, Cunningham worked as an ocean engineer and a construction attorney.

Gun violence prevention is a critical issue in South Carolina’s First Congressional District, which is located near the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston that was the site of the 2015 shooting which killed nine African-American worshippers. Congressman Cunningham was an original co-sponsor of bipartisan legislation with Congressman Jim Clyburn to address the loophole that allowed that shooter to obtain his gun. That legislation passed the House in February 2019. As a gun owner and a father, Representative Cunningham understands the importance of responsible gun ownership aided by commonsense legislation that keeps people safe. He will undoubtedly continue fighting for lifesaving reforms.
