Proudly born and raised in Pennsylvania, Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman has dedicated his career to serving his community. After graduating college, he got his start by joining Americorps, where he fought to address inequality and started a GED program in his hometown of Braddock, Pennsylvania. While running this program, Lieutenant Governor Fetterman tragically lost two of his students to gun violence. Like so many in the gun safety movement, he turned tragedy into action and successfully ran for mayor in an effort to save lives and make his town a safer place for all.
As mayor, Lieutenant Governor Fetterman implemented numerous initiatives to lower the chances that another family would lose a loved one to senseless gun violence. He focused on breaking the cycle of violence in Braddock by working with the police department to develop a community policing model focused on reducing gun deaths and homicides. In the five and a half years following the creation of this model, Braddock did not record a single homicide or any loss of life from gun violence. In 2018, he was elected to serve as lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, and in this capacity he has been a passionate advocate for criminal justice reform. In office, Lieutenant Governor Fetterman notably hosted listening tours in all 67 of Pennsylvania’s counties and championed commonsense solutions to America’s epidemic of gun violence, including passing universal background checks.
As both a responsible gun owner and as someone who has suffered the pain of losing a close connection to gun violence, Lieutenant Governor Fetterman intimately understands the need to implement federal gun safety laws. In the Senate, he’ll be a leading voice for lifesaving measures that will keep Pennsylvania communities safe. With our gun safety Senate majority on the line this fall, we must do everything possible to elect Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman to be Pennsylvania’s next US senator. We know that with him in office, Pennsylvanians will once again have a champion that will fight until every American can live their lives free from the threat of senseless gun violence.
