When Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton was sworn in as Illinois’s lieutenant governor in 2019, she pledged to be a leader who would listen to different perspectives and be a partner in bettering the lives of others. As a wife, mother, and lifelong Illinoisan, she understands that a core part of that work includes keeping the residents of her state safe from the scourge of gun violence.
Alongside Governor JB Pritzker, Lt. Governor Stratton has fought to treat gun violence as a public health epidemic, build safer communities, and increase firearm safety and accountability between law enforcement and the communities they serve, while also working to address the root causes of systemic disinvestment in communities. For Lt. Governor Stratton, this work is the continuation of a long career spent working to protect others. Prior to her time as lieutenant governor, she served as the director of the Center for Public Safety and Justice at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she sought to create safer communities through convening and training public safety stakeholders to work more effectively with community residents. She served as a state representative for two years, during which she pushed for the passage of comprehensive gun safety legislation to keep her constituents safe from harm. In her current role, she also serves as the head of the Justice, Equity, and Opportunity Initiative—a key body that advises Governor Pritzker on justice reform policy and legislation, oversees several criminal justice-related agencies, and convenes advocates and stakeholders to advance equity-focused policies and practices.
As a survivor of gun violence herself, Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton brings a unique level of experience to the job of governing. With rates of violence spiking to record highs, it is more imperative than ever that voters reelect gun safety champions like her to office—where we know she will never stop working until every child across the state of Illinois can live a safer life free from gun violence.
