Delegate Kannan Srinivasan knows what it takes to make history and get things done. As the first Indian American immigrant to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates, he has proven to be one of the most effective legislators in Richmond—passing eight pieces of legislation through the house and senate, nearly all with bipartisan support, in his first year in office alone. Now, he’s running for the Virginia Senate to build on this progress, hold the body’s slim majority, and tackle the biggest problems facing children and families across the commonwealth, including our nation’s epidemic of gun violence.
Delegate Srinivasan knows that while Virginia has made great progress in the fight to save lives, there is still so much more to be done to build a safer future for the next generation. In his current capacity, he has worked with partners across the commonwealth to pass legislation to create a statewide report on the impact of Virginia’s red flag laws and supported a budget that invested millions into sustainable, proven solutions that intercept and eliminate local cycles of gun violence through community based initiatives and youth engagement. He also cosponsored and passed legislation banning auto sears and establishing a misdemeanor to own and sell firearms with altered or destroyed serial numbers. In the senate, he’ll work tirelessly to protect the progress made in recent years and continue to build on it by banning the sale and proliferation of untraceable ghost guns across Virginia, better disarm domestic abusers, and push back against the gun lobby and its dangerous tactics and rhetorics, much of which has gone unchecked given its undue protections under the law.
With so much on the line in this crucial special election, it’s imperative that Virginians speak with one voice in sending Delegate Kannan Srinivasan to the senate with a strong mandate to lead the fight for a safer future. With him working on this issue, we know progress is possible and that an end to gun violence is within reach.
