A first generation American, Karla Hernandez has spent her career in service of Florida’s kids and communities. As a mother and school teacher, she has been an steadfast champion for gun safety so that Floridians can live their lives free of the fear of senseless gun violence. After a career improving the Miami-Dade school system, Hernandez is now seeking to improve life for communities across Florida—and she knows the first step in doing so is passing commonsense, lifesaving gun safety legislation. 

Following the Pulse and Parkland shootings, Hernandez joined parents, teachers, and students to rally for lifesaving gun reform across the Sunshine State. In the wake of the tragic shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, she once again called for action from Florida’s leaders that would show that children’s lives are more valuable than guns. When Congressman Charlie Crist asked her to join his ticket to defeat Governor Ron DeSantis and build a Florida with lifesaving gun laws, she was honored to accept. Together, they will enact policies that will keep families safe, including banning the sale of assault weapons, fighting for background checks, and keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people.

Karla Hernandez has made delivering results for the students of Miami-Dade a hallmark of her career, and we know she will continue to do so as lieutenant governor. Firearms are the number one killer of school age children in the United States, and she understands that it’s time for our leaders to step up and address the violence plaguing Florida head on. We know she will always fight to ensure that no family has to experience the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence.
