As a mother, Representative Kathy Castor was devastated by the school shootings in Uvalde, Parkland, and Newtown, and she knows that we have so much more to do to keep our children safe from gun violence.
In Congress, Representative Castor has always been an independent voice for the greater Tampa region and has taken on tough special interests like the gun lobby—and won. Knowing that gun violence kills far too many Floridians every year, Representative Castor has worked to champion legislation in Washington DC to get military-style weapons off our streets, enhance background checks, and close dangerous loopholes in our federal gun laws. As a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, she has tirelessly pushed for action on this life-or-death issue. In 2014, she participated in a sit-in with the late Representative John Lewis to advocate for needed gun violence research funding and in 2019, she joined colleagues from across the Democratic Caucus in urging then–Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell to bring sensible gun legislation to the floor. In 2022, Representative Castor also joined with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the first major gun safety bill signed into law in nearly 30 years, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—which enhanced the background check system, made gun trafficking a federal crime, and allocated the largest investment of funds to lifesaving community violence intervention programs in American history.
