Candidate
Kim Foxx
State’s Attorney
Illinois
Democrat
Incumbent2020
Growing up in inner-city Chicago, Kim Foxx was surrounded by the everyday gun violence that disproportionately affects the city’s black and brown residents. After she graduated from law school, Foxx decided to return to Cook County to work in the public sector, first as an assistant public guardian and then as an assistant state’s attorney, using the power of the law to protect the most vulnerable groups in her community. In 2016, she continued down the path of public service by taking office as state’s attorney.
As manager of the second largest prosecutor’s office in the country, Foxx has taken a data-driven approach to shift the focus of the state’s attorney office from punishment to rehabilitation. She has worked to reduce over-policing and police violence in order to begin bridging the divide between the community and law enforcement in the county. Her reforms have led to increased transparency, stronger trust in the state’s attorney office, and lower rates of incarceration. Throughout her career, Foxx has been a tireless advocate for equity and justice, and she understands that the epidemic of gun violence cannot end without addressing the problem in all its forms.
