Attorney General Kwame Raoul brings a lifetime of legal experience to his work as the people’s champion. He began his legal career as a prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, worked as a senior staff attorney for the City Colleges of Chicago, was a partner at two national law firms, and served in the Illinois State Senate from 2004 to 2019. In Springfield, he successfully pushed for commonsense gun safety laws that expanded background checks, required gun owners to report lost or stolen guns, and kept guns out of the hands of those who commit domestic violence. Now, as Illinois’s chief legal and law enforcement officer, Attorney General Raoul is known for working in a bipartisan manner with prosecutors and police chiefs across the state to fight crime and keep residents of his state safe from harm.
To fight the prevalence of gun violence in Illinois, Attorney General Raoul has worked in partnership with the US Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center to conduct training to better prevent mass shooting threats in schools, places of worship, and other public places. He has also pushed for stronger federal regulation on ghost guns, which can evade gun tracing by authorities and which criminals, carjackers, and individuals who commit domestic violence prohibited from purchasing a gun can access without important safety measures. In his current capacity, Attorney General Raoul has also worked to hold gun manufacturers accountable—even going as far as suing to revoke the license of a rogue gun maker that produced the kinds of cheap guns criminals use in carjackings.
After the Supreme Court’s ruling in NYSRPA v. Bruen invalidated important state gun safety laws earlier this year, it’s clearer than ever that we need to elect as many gun safety attorneys general as possible this fall to push back against harmful judicial overreach. Attorney General Kwame Raoul will do just that, and it is critical that he is reelected this fall. We know he will always prioritize gun violence prevention and be a steadfast advocate for the types of stronger gun laws that can save lives across Illinois and ensure a safer future for our children.
