For Delegate Lashrecse Aird, ending gun violence is personal. As a child, Delegate Aird lived in communities plagued by everyday shootings and was forced to deal with the pain of a family member being wounded by senseless violence. Now, as a mother, she is witnessing cycles of violence play out in real time as she has to witness her own children being subjected to the sounds of gunshots in their neighborhood. However, she has turned these formative experiences into action and been a leader in the fight to save lives while in office. During her time in the House of Delegates, Delegate Aird was instrumental in passing some of Virginia’s most historic gun safety reforms, including the Commonwealth’s extreme risk protection order law and legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales. 

Now, she’s running for the Virginia Senate, where she will be a champion for new initiatives designed to keep her constituents safe—like legislation to increase state grant funding for community-based programming to help local governments combat the rise in gun violence among young people. With the gun safety majority in the Virginia Senate on the line this fall, it’s imperative that voters send Lashrecse Aird back to Richmond.
