Born in a Thai refugee camp, Macomb County Commissioner Mai Xiong first came to the United States in 1987 after her family fled persecution in the wake of the Vietnam War. Although they sought a safer future in America, new threats of violence continued to loom large for Xiong and her family in their new home—this time from America’s epidemic of gun violence.
In recent years, Michiganders have had to endure the disproportionate impact of mass shootings and everyday violence, and too many families and communities have been torn apart. Now, Xiong is running to do something about it. In 2020, she made history when she became the first Hmong-American elected official in Michigan, and on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, she’s championed initiatives to bolster public safety and support survivors of violence. As a mother of four school-aged children, she knows that our kids deserve to be able to focus on their studies, rather than worrying about their safety—and in office, she will work to build on the incredible legislative progress happening in Michigan and reach across the aisle to pass meaningful solutions that keep our communities safe without infringing on the rights of responsible gun owners. Now more than ever, we need to elect officials who will do the hard work of building a safer future for the next generation, and that starts with sending Mai Xiong to Lansing.

We are proud to endorse Mai Xiong for the Michigan House of Representatives.
