Senator Martin Heinrich is a natural problem solver who is committed to helping others and building a safering and more prosperous future for his state’s children and families. A key part of that work is preventing the senseless gun violence that has torn apart too many communities across New Mexico—and throughout his career, Senator Heinrich has proven that he’s ready to work with anyone to improve the lives of his constituents and get the job done on some of the most intractable issues facing everyday New Mexicans.
Like many in this movement, Senator Heinrich knows that we need to expand background checks to all gun sales, implement lifesaving red flag laws, and adequately fund community violence intervention programs. But in recent years, he’s taken his advocacy on gun safety a step further by introducing comprehensive reforms designed to save lives while respecting the Second Amendment rights of all Americans. In 2022, he joined with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years. In 2023, he also introduced the historic GOSAFE Act, which would limit the sale of the deadly gas-operated semiautomatic guns used in countless mass shootings. And after the Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on bump stocks earlier this year, Senator Heinrich introduced the BUMP Act to permanently codify prohibitions on the sale of devices that allow semiautomatic weapons to rapidly fire multiple rounds like machine guns.
Throughout his time in office, Senator Heinrich has also been at the forefront of addressing the international dimensions of crime and the root causes of migration. In 2022, he successfully criminalized the trafficking of firearms into Mexico, aiming to disrupt the flow of illegal weapons that contribute to violence both in Mexico and the Northern Triangle. His legislation not only targets the source of many criminal activities but also reduces the factors that drive people to flee their homes in search of safety in America.
This fall, it’s imperative that New Mexicans send Senator Heinrich back to Washington DC to continue the important work of saving lives. With him leading the charge on this issue as part of a gun safety majority in the US Senate, we can continue to pass transformational legislation that will keep every community safe. We owe it to the next generation and can’t let them down.
