Governor Ned Lamont takes pride in Connecticut’s status as a champion of commonsense gun safety laws, and he has worked to protect and expand them during his four years in Hartford. After one of the worst tragedies in state history—the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School—legislators acted swiftly to enact laws that would prevent future acts of senseless gun violence. Governor Lamont has preserved their efforts and continued their legacy by signing multiple gun safety bills to keep our children, families, and communities safe.
In 2021, Governor Lamont passed critical legislation to strengthen Connecticut’s landmark extreme risk law. The original law, passed in 1999, was the first of its kind in the nation, and it gave law enforcement the authority to temporarily remove firearms from someone when they are a significant risk of harm to themselves or others. The provisions signed recently by Governor Lamont allow family members and clinicians to request court intervention when a person poses an imminent risk of injury to themselves or others with a firearm. The updated legislation also allows seized weapons to be held in perpetuity, permits law enforcement to seize additional weapons, and prevents individuals under an active risk warrant from purchasing new firearms, closing various loopholes in the original law.
Governor Lamont has also taken action to promote responsible gun ownership, including signing Ethan’s Law, a landmark piece of legislation that mandates the safe storage of unattended firearms in homes where children are present. He also worked across state lines to help institute an agreement with the governors of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania to share gun data between the states in an effort to reduce crime across the region.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court showed us how easily protections designed to keep Americans safe can be rolled back, and made it clear that having governors in office who will work to protect their constituents from harm is more important than ever. Governor Ned Lamont is committed to upholding Connecticut’s existing gun safety laws and we know he will always find the courage to act on this issue—paving the way towards a safer, brighter future for Connecticut’s children and families.
