Attorney General Peter Neronha has spent his career working for Rhode Islanders and making the state a safer place for all. After nearly 30 years serving the people of Rhode Island as a state and federal prosecutor, Attorney General Neronha was elected to his current office in 2018. In office, he has always put communities first, defending reproductive freedom, fighting climate change, and successfully championing gun violence prevention laws.
Attorney General Neronha has taken a proactive approach to dealing with gun violence. In 2021, he created a Violent Crime Task Force to target illegal firearms and perpetrators of violence in Rhode Island communities. This task force uses new ballistics technology and information analysis to target guns used to commit crimes to take them and those who use them off the streets. Although his office does not have any legislative power, Attorney General Neronha has been a champion for commonsense gun safety laws. Over the past four years he has worked with the general assembly and gun violence prevention advocates to successfully pass laws that keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous people such as a ban on ghost guns and a prohibition on straw purchasing. Attorney General Neronha has also championed legislation that reduces the risk of gun violence, advocating for laws banning concealed carry in schools and the open carry of rifles and shotguns as well as raising the age to purchase firearms from 18 to 21. The state legislature has passed these bills into law, making Rhode Island a safer state for all.
