Senator Richard Blumenthal will never forget the feeling when he stood in the space just outside a firehouse in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, almost 10 years ago as 20 families learned that their children would not be coming home that night. That same bottomless grief has hit thousands of families across America, and Senator Blumenthal is committed to honoring those whose lives were taken by gun violence with action.
In office, Senator Blumenthal has led—and continues to lead—the charge to close glaring loopholes in federal law that allow dangerous individuals to purchase and own firearms, fund community violence intervention programs, ban ghost guns, and pass measures to protect survivors of domestic violence. He is also currently helping to lead negotiations with Republicans to produce meaningful gun safety legislation following the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas. In particular, Senator Blumenthal is working across the aisle to develop federal extreme risk legislation, which will create a system to enable law enforcement officials to temporarily seize firearms from individuals who are a threat to themselves or others. Senator Blumenthal has also championed landmark legislation like Ethan’s Law, which would create federal requirements for safe gun storage in residences where children are present. The legislation is named in honor of Ethan Song, a teenager from Guilford, Connecticut, who was tragically killed on January 31, 2018, after an accidental shooting with an unsecured gun in a neighbor’s home.
With the gun safety Senate majority on the line in 2022, it is more important than ever that we keep champions like Senator Blumenthal, who are committed to tackling our nation’s epidemic of gun violence head-on and in a bipartisan way, in office for another term.
