During his four decades of service to the people of Oregon, Senator Ron Wyden has never once wavered in his dedication to keeping his state’s residents safe from the deadly impacts of gun violence. As both a congressman, and now as Oregon’s senior US senator, Senator Wyden has continually put the needs of his constituents first and has been a staunch advocate for the types of commonsense solutions needed to reduce crime and keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands. Senator Wyden has seen how decade after decade of inaction on this issue has led to an ever-increasing number of senseless tragedies and families being torn apart, and we know that he understands the passion and urgency needed to address our nation’s rising rates of violence.
As a congressman, Senator Wyden quickly got to work as a leader in the movement to end gun violence, proudly earning an “F” rating from the NRA. In the years since, he has consistently voted in favor of legislation to close the gun show loophole, repeal gun industry immunity, and implement universal background checks. In his current capacity in the Senate, Senator Wyden has continued to advocate for the most vulnerable Oregonians by introducing new legislation to curb high rates of domestic violence, such as the Lori Jackson—Nicolette Elias Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act. This legislation would close the “boyfriend loophole” and prevent dating partners that commit acts of domestic violence from possessing or accessing firearms.
Senator Wyden knows that America’s epidemic of gun violence is multifaceted, and he has been a consistent cosponsor of bills to standardize the safe storage of firearms, protect and provide resources to victims and survivors of gun violence, invest in mental health resources, and prevent dangerous 3D printed firearms from flooding the marketplace. With the gun safety Senate majority on the line in 2022, it is more important than ever that we keep champions like Senator Ron Wyden—who have the courage to act and are committed to tackling this crisis head on—in office for another term.
