Representative Rosa DeLauro has tirelessly worked on behalf of the people of Connecticut’s 3rd District for more than 30 years. A native of New Haven, Representative DeLauro previously served as the executive director of EMILY’s List and as former Senator Chris Dodd’s chief of staff before being elected to Congress. In office, Representative DeLauro uses her influential position as the ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees all federal discretionary spending, to advance key gun safety priorities. In 2019, she played a critical role in breaking through a gun lobby blockade to secure the first federal funding for gun violence research at the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health in more than two decades—and she’s determined to make sure that this critical funding is sustained.
Like many in the movement for gun safety, Representative DeLauro believes that Congress has a moral responsibility to enact universal background checks, keep guns out of the hands of individuals who commit domestic abuse, and hold gun manufacturers accountable for crimes committed with their weapons. For this reason, Representative DeLauro has introduced critical legislation like the SAFER Streets Act, which would incentivize owners of assault weapons to turn in their weapons by offering a $2,000 tax credit for two years to an individual who voluntarily turns in their assault weapon to state police. In January 2023, Representative DeLauro also reintroduced Ethan’s Law, which boasts the support of over 200 members of Congress. Named in honor of Ethan Song, a teenager from Guilford, Connecticut who was tragically killed in 2018 by an unsecured gun in a neighbor’s home, the bill would address the dangers faced by an estimated 4.6 million American minors who live in homes with loaded and unlocked guns by creating federal requirements for safe gun storage and establishing strong penalties for any violations.
We know that Representative Rosa DeLauro will always help to lead the charge for a safer America and set the stage for a future free from gun violence—and Connecticuters must reelect her in 2024.
