Throughout his career, from the battlefield to the halls of Congress, Congressman Ruben Gallego has always put the safety of his community and country first. Having served in the United States Marine Corps and deployed as an infantryman to Iraq, Congressman Gallego understands the power of dangerous weapons and knows that they have no place in civilian life—and in office, he’s worked tirelessly to do everything possible to shield Arizona’s children and families from the scourge of senseless gun violence.
Like so many in this movement, Congressman Gallego knows that it is unconscionable that our nation has allowed our epidemic of gun violence to go unchecked for this long. He rightly believes that kids should be practicing their math and spelling, not practicing hiding under their desks. As a responsible gun owner himself, Congressman Gallego knows that we can pass the commonsense gun safety laws that the vast majority of Arizonans want to see implemented without infringing on constitutional rights. In the US House, Congressman Gallego has fought to do just that by cosponsoring and voting for lifesaving legislation like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, the Assault Weapons Ban, and Ethan’s Law. In 2022, he also joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years. This landmark bill made gun trafficking a federal crime, addressed dangerous loopholes in our laws that allowed domestic abusers to access guns, and made the largest investment in community violence intervention programs in American history. For Congressman Gallego, passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was an important first step after years of inaction, but more work remains to be done to end the epidemic of gun violence in America—and in the US Senate, he’ll be wholly committed to keeping weapons of war off our streets and building a safer future for every Arizonan.
The fate of our razor thin gun safety majority in the US Senate is on the line this fall, and voters across Arizona must mobilize like never before to elect Congressman Ruben Gallego in November. With him helping lead the charge on this issue in Washington DC, we know progress is possible.
