State Senator Sarah Elfreth has centered her career in public service around giving back to others and has always strived to make life better for her constituents. She knows that Marylanders of all backgrounds deserve to feel safe in their communities and has consistently fought to take on America’s epidemic of gun violence since she was first elected to the legislature in 2018. For her community, this issue is personal—her district includes the site of the deadly mass shooting at the office of the Capital Gazette newspaper, in which a gunman killed five employees.
In Annapolis, Senator Elfreth has been an unparalleled leader in supporting victims of gun violence and holding the firearm industry responsible for their role in escalating rates of gun violence: She sponsored the Comprehensive Community Safety Funding Act, which created a new structure that directed tax revenue from the sale and transfer of firearms to go straight to supporting Maryland Trauma Centers, violence intervention and prevention programs, and victims services. As chair of the Senate Budget and Taxation Subcommittee on Public Safety, Transportation, and the Environment, Senator Elfreth fought to require state agencies to issue reports on the critical issues contributing to gun violence in Maryland to ensure that lawmakers have the information necessary to shape policy to meaningfully address the issue head on. In Congress, she’ll be a determined champion for commonsense measures designed to keep our communities safe—like universal background checks, red flag laws, and measures to incentivize the safe storage of firearms.
With so much on the line in 2024, it’s imperative that Marylanders from across the Third District rally around a proven gun safety champion like Senator Sarah Elfreth this fall. With her leading the way on this issue in Washington DC, we know a better world is possible and that an end to gun violence is within reach.
