For Senator Tim Kaine, the need to tackle America’s epidemic of gun violence is deeply personal. In 2007, when he was serving as governor of Virginia, Senator Kaine’s state became home to the deadliest school shooting in American history when a gunman killed 32 people and wounded 17 others on the campus of Virginia Tech University. In the years that followed, he has worked tirelessly to honor those lost that day with action, as well as the countless other Virginians killed by gun violence.

Senator Kaine knows that we can work to keep our communities safe and prevent families from being torn apart by senseless violence without infringing on the Second Amendment. In Washington DC, he’s consistently sought to reach across the aisle to achieve real results on this issue, and he’s been a strong champion for lifesaving policies like universal background checks, extreme risk laws, and bans on the sale of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines since he was first elected. In office, Senator Kaine has introduced legislation to combat gun violence head on, like the Responsible Transfer of Firearms Act—which would hold people responsible for selling or transferring a firearm to someone who is barred by federal law from possessing firearms—and the Virginia Plan to Reduce Gun Violence Act—which would codify many of the same significant gun safety provisions passed at the state level in Virginia into federal law. In 2022, Senator Kaine also helped enact the first major gun safety law passed in nearly 30 years: the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. 

With so much on the line this fall, it’s important that voters across Virginia mobilize like never before to send committed gun safety champions like Senator Tim Kaine back to Capitol Hill.
