Governor Tim Walz’s life and career have been defined by service to others, from his 24 years in the Army National Guard to his time as a high school geography teacher and football coach, as well as in elected office as both a six-term member of the US House of Representatives and as the 41st governor of Minnesota. In every role, Governor Walz has sought to make the world a better, safer place for his constituents and fought to deliver results for children and families on some of the most intractable issues of the day—including America’s epidemic of gun violence.
As both a responsible gun owner and an avid hunter, Governor Walz has a deep respect for the Second Amendment and the right of any American to own a firearm if they so choose. At the same time, Governor Walz is the proud parent of two kids and he understands that we can and must do more to keep every child in America safe. He knows that these two realities are not mutually exclusive, and throughout his career, Governor Walz has struck a balance on policy that has helped chart a new way forward for gun owners and public safety advocates alike.
During his tenure representing a swing district in the US House of Representatives, Governor Walz voted to expand background checks, prevent people on the No Fly list from being able to purchase firearms, and fund critical research into gun violence—not because these concepts were politically advantageous, but because they were the right thing to do. He continued to champion similar reforms after first being elected governor of Minnesota in 2018, and after voters delivered him a second term and gun safety majorities in both of his state’s legislative chambers in 2022, Governor Walz took decisive action and got universal background checks and red flag laws passed in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. In addition to signing these lifesaving measures into law, Governor Walz has fought tirelessly to allocate needed funding to comprehensive community safety and gun violence reduction programs, tackle the root causes of violence, and better educate his constituents on the need for the safe storage of firearms—all of which will save Minnesotan lives for years to come.
In the face of challenges that seem insurmountable, Governor Tim Walz has consistently provided the leadership needed to move Minnesota forward. As our next vice president, he’ll continue to do so at the national level by working every day to lift up communities from coast to coast. Alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, he’ll be an unparalleled champion in the fight to build a safer future for our children and deliver the better, stronger America free from gun violence the next generation deserves.
