Representative Mikie Sherrill has always put service to her country and community first. She came to Congress with extensive experience handling firearms and a deep, nuanced understanding of the need to end America’s gun violence epidemic. In the US Navy, she qualified as an expert shot, learning firsthand the skill and care with which firearms must be handled. As an assistant US attorney in New Jersey, Representative Sherrill witnessed the devastating impact illegal weapons were having on her state’s communities—as weak gun laws in neighboring states hampered the impact of New Jersey’s strong gun safety standards—and recognized the need for federal action. Never one to sit on the sidelines, Representative Sherrill took action by running for Congress and flipping a red district blue in 2018.
In office, Representative Sherrill has pushed for commonsense gun safety measures while also protecting the Second Amendment rights of responsible gun owners. The first bill she co-sponsored was a measure to extend background checks to all gun sales—and she proudly helped pass that legislation through the House in both 2019 and 2021. Throughout her time in Washington DC, Representative Sherrill has also voted to ban bump stocks, incentivize the safe storage of firearms, secure desperately needed federal funding for research into the root causes of gun violence, disarm domestic abusers, and provide needed appropriations to lifesaving community violence intervention programs. In 2022, Representative Sherrill also played a crucial role in helping to pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act: the first major gun safety bill to be signed into law in nearly 30 years.
Representative Sherrill understands that preventing gun violence requires coordination from national, state, and local governments alongside our communities and law enforcement. This bold, sensible approach is needed in Congress more than ever, and we must reelect Representative Mikie Sherrill for another term this November.
