Peter Ambler, Giffords Executive Director:
“In November, Minnesotans across the state said enough is enough, and voted to address rising rates of violence. Now, Minnesota leaders must act and pass lifesaving measures like universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders. Our poll shows that an overwhelming number of Minnesotans—including gun owners—back these commonsense policies. The people of Minnesota are demanding action and it’s time for their leaders to pass the lifesaving legislation that has been introduced in St. Paul.”
The polling found that:
- Seventy-six percent of respondents support extreme risk protection orders, also known as red flag laws, which allow the temporary removal of firearms from people who pose a risk to themselves or others.
- The overwhelming majority (92%) of Minnesota voters say they support requiring a background check for all firearms sold in Minnesota. That includes 99% of Democrats, 89% of Independents, and 86% of Republicans.
- Needed violence intervention programs that work within communities to address the root causes of gun violence were also supported by 83% of voters.
- The majority of gun owners support more gun safety laws: 92% support universal background checks and 72% support extreme risk protection orders.
