GIFFORDS applauds Biden-Harris action to end gender-based violence

The announcement comes on the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON — Today, the national gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, applauded the executive action taken today by the Biden-Harris administration to strengthen the Violence Against Women Act and end gender-based violence. The executive action will help keep guns out of the hands of people who have committed domestic violence by providing funding to states.

“The Violence Against Women Act transformed the way this nation addressed domestic violence, and continues to save countless lives. We’re grateful for President Biden’s decades of leadership on this issue,” said GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown. “Firearms are the most common weapons used in domestic violence homicides, and the mere presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed. The funding the Biden-Harris administration is making available to states will help ensure that those convicted of domestic violence restraining orders don’t have access to firearms. This is an important step forward in the fight to save lives. We urge Governors and local leaders to use these funds to make our communities and families safer.”
