Gabby Giffords: Vice President Harris demonstrated the courage and compassion this country needs in a leader

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the national gun violence prevention organization GIFFORDS, released the following statement in response to tonight’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. 

“Tonight’s debate made Americans’ choice in this election crystal clear. Vice President Harris demonstrated the courage and compassion this country needs in a leader. She is the only candidate who will protect our rights and freedoms—and I’m proud to stand with her in this must-win race,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. 

“Guns are the number-one killer of young people in this country and children deserve the freedom to grow up without the fear of gun violence. Just last week, we saw another horrific school shooting in Georgia, where two 14-year-olds and two teachers were killed. We need a president who will do everything they can to put the safety of the American people first. Unlike Donald Trump, Vice President Harris knows that gun violence is a public health crisis and she has the experience and the courage to take on the gun lobby,” Giffords added. 

Vice President Harris has vast experience acting on gun safety, from helping break a nearly 30 year logjam on federal gun safety with the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, to leading the Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
