GIFFORDS, Equis launch GOTV ad featuring Uvalde parent
The ad, airing in swing states with a six-figure ad buy, features Kimberly Rubio, mother of Uvalde school shooting victim Lexi Rubio
WASHINGTON — Today, GIFFORDS Law Center, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and Equis, the Latino polling and research firm, launched a “Get Out the Vote” ad targeted to Latino communities in Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and Texas. The ad features Kimberly Rubio, mother of Uvalde school shooting victim Lexi Rubio.
“Guns are the top killer of kids in the United States, and the Latino community is disproportionately impacted by gun violence. We have an opportunity to make change, but only if we vote. It is imperative that everyone gets out to the polls and makes their voices heard. Lives depend on it. Change won’t happen until we elect people who represent us, and not the gun lobby,” said Vanessa N. Gonzalez, GIFFORDS Vice President of Government and Political Affairs.
Data from Equis shows that “selfless voting” messaging—an emotional appeal to vote with someone in mind who cannot vote themselves—is an effective way to mobilize Latino voters. Examples include a child, a friend who is a Dreamer, or a neighbor who is undocumented.
TRANSCRIPT:
Kimberly Rubio: My name is Kimberly Rubio, and my daughter Lexi is a victim of the Uvalde school shooting.
Newscast: Hoy las banderas de los Estados Unidos ondean a media asta en señal de luto por la peor massacre escolar en Texas. 19 estudiantes murieron, y dos maestros también.
Kimberly Rubio: The elementary school there in Uvalde, Texas is now the scene of the second deadliest school shooting in our nation’s history. 19 children and two teachers were killed.
Kimberly Rubio: Unfortunately her death is not unique in America, where guns are the leading cause of death among children and teens. On the morning of her death Lexi received the good citizen award, so in her honor, I’ll be voting this November and I urge you to do the same.
