One year later, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords remembers Lewiston, Maine Shooting

WASHINGTON — Ahead of October 25, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the national gun safety organization GIFFORDS, honors the victims and survivors of the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, that took place one year ago. Eighteen lives were lost and 13 people were injured.

“Today, my thoughts are with the Lewiston, Maine community, victims, the survivors and all of the families whose lives have been irrevocably impacted by a tragedy that should have been prevented,“ said former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “Every American should be able to live in their community without fear. Every family should be able to enjoy a trip to the bowling alley or a restaurant, without wondering if they are about to lose someone they love. GIFFORDS won’t stop supporting Mainers and advocates across the country fighting to pass common sense policies that are proven to prevent gun violence, like expanded background checks and the 72-hour waiting period that Maine passed in April. While reforms like these are essential to protecting our communities, there is still more work to be done in Maine, including passing a true red flag law and banning dangerous devices like bump stocks.”
