Gabrielle Giffords honors the victims of the Club Q shooting in Colorado Springs
WASHINGTON — Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, founder of the national gun safety organization GIFFORDS, honored the lives of the five people killed during a shooting at the LGBTQ+ nightclub Club Q in Colorado Springs in 2022. In addition to those killed, 25 people were injured in the hate-motivated attack, which was carried out with an AR-15–style rifle.
“Two years ago, five lives were cut short and countless others were changed in a shooting that terrorized Colorado’s LGBTQ+ community,” saidformer Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. “Today, I’m thinking of the victims and their families, and honoring the resilience of the community they left behind. We at GIFFORDS will never stop fighting for a world where all people, regardless of their gender or sexuality, can live free from gun violence.
“In the last decade, the number of hate crimes has nearly doubled,” said Giffords. “This attack overlapped with Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day meant to honor those murdered because of transphobia. GIFFORDS stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, and we remain committed to fighting against irresponsible gun policies that lead to tragedies like this.”
