GIFFORDS Champion Award Winner Lateefah Simon elected to US House
WASHINGTON —GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated Rep.-elect Lateefah Simon on her election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Simon was an inaugural recipient of the GIFFORDS Champion Award.
“For over 25 years, Lateefah Simon has been a fearless advocate for justice and public safety in the Bay Area. That’s why we were proud to award her with one of our inaugural GIFFORDS Champion Awards. I know her advocacy will continue in her next chapter in Congress,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “As someone who has witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of gun violence in her community, Rep.-elect Simon brings both the passion and the expertise needed to address this public health crisis. I look forward to working alongside Rep.-elect Simon as she fights to build a safer future for all Americans.”
Simon is a nationally recognized advocate for civil rights and social justice who has been serving her community in Oakland and the Bay Area for more than 25 years. Like so many in this movement, she knows that gun violence is a public health crisis that must be addressed head on. In Congress, she’ll work tirelessly to pass lifesaving measures like universal background checks, a federal extreme risk law and strong safe storage standards.
